Introduction

Dear Fellow members of the Korean Society of Peritoneal Malignancies,

The Korean Society of Peritoneal Malignancies was founded in April 2005 by surgeons, obstetrics, and gynecologists who had deep empathy for patients suffering from peritoneal cancer and were devoted to overcome its intractability. Our society was officially launched in June 2005 after holding the inaugural conference and the inaugural general meeting.

As you already know, peritoneal metastasis is difficult to treat and has a very poor prognosis.
The desperate war against peritoneal metastasis through cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC (Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy) has given patients hope of healing, but its efficacy is still controversial.

There has been steady development of our society since its first establishment and continuous efforts of many senior doctors led to a second leap forward in July 2013, when Cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC was recognized as new health technology in patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis originating from colorectal and ovarian cancer.

Cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC has now become the newest and hottest subject in conferences held by surgeons and gynecologists. Also, many surgeons and gynecologists who are interested in this treatment are implementing it in their hospitals. Of course, Multi-disciplinary approaches including oncology, radiology, pathology, radiology, and nuclear medicine are essential to improve treatment outcomes, but above all, the leading roles are demanded from surgeons and obstetricians. In addition, active clinical research as well as basic research on peritoneal metastasis is required for further development of the society.

Following the hard-earned achievements made by senior doctors so far, we will continue to carry out active interactions with Asian and International Society of Peritoneal Malignancies, and focus on basic and clinical research related to Cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC so that Korean Society of Peritoneal Malignancies can develop into an academic society that can play a pivotal role in treating peritoneal cancer.

In addition, we will make every effort to make this society a society that can give hope of healing to desperate patients with peritoneal cancer.

To this end, we ask for your active participation and support.
